The Riverside Rebels travelled to Ormiston last weekend to take on the Southern Bay Cyclones in the first round of the Scotney Cup.
The Cyclones scored first and converted giving them an early advantage and somewhat dampening the Rebels spirits.
Not too long after halfback Adam Mulherin was sent from the field for a 10 minute spell, the Rebels found themselves having to fight their way back into the game.
Captain Justin Benfield banded the team together, enabling Riverside to strike back and put the game in full contention.
With another Southern Bay try, the forwards efforts in the scrums and lineouts started to take a toll on them and the backs were reaching deep for any energy they could muster.
The second half of the game started off much better for the Rebels with halfback Adam Mulherin redeeming him with a well-placed kick that saw winger James Breene score and give the Rebels a strong boost.
Followed by two more tries to Riverside, the teams’ fitness and vigour enabled them to prevail over the home side and dominate the second half of the game.
The Rebels shut out the Cyclones right up to the end until they were able to break the line and score in the dying minutes, however with Riverside still victorious 27-22.
Riverside now turns their sights to round two where they will be facing Everton Park at home this Saturday.
